Resolutioners, let’s get real: Convenience is key. If the gym is too far away, the supermarket too busy, the salad spot a block past the hoagie hut, you might as well put your good intentions out with the Christmas tree.

But meal-delivery companies, which bring prepared food right to your door, have become increasingly affordable and flexible – and have made their food tastier – over the last few years. Some are even local.

As our definition of “healthy eating” shifts, so do the offerings from these companies. All aid in weight loss, but there are also meals for gluten-avoiders, nutrient-seekers, picky eaters, meat-refusers, diabetics, allergy sufferers, new moms, soon-to-be-moms, cleanse fans, and even those with the humble goals of eating organic and natural.

All of the companies we taste-tested offer versatility and ease of use. Clients can stock up for as many days and meal periods as they like, and the websites and ordering processes are seamless. Here is a look at the delivery services we tried.

The Fresh Diet, based in Surfside, Fla., also delivers a full day of eating, (snack and sweet included), does not have a shake, and best of all, lets you pick dishes through an easy-to-use website. For lunch, the Asian steak sandwich has nice slices of beef, and the egg-roll snack tasted good, although it was gone in two bites. The Key lime pie dessert was sweet and creamy with a thick graham crust.

With this premium plan, the more you commit to, the more you save. Seven days of food is about $60 a day; sign up for 31 days and the price drops to about $45 a day. With 72 hours’ notice, you can start and stop delivery days without a penalty, which makes taking the weekend off almost too easy.

The Fresh Diet

A Dream Diet with Wholesome Gourmet Meals Delivered Daily

The Fresh Diet provides customers with perfectly balanced, healthy and delicious meals in the right portions for maximum weight benefits, delivered daily to their homes.  Created by a Le Cordon Bleu Institute trained chef, all meals are delicious and healthy.  As noted, “The Fresh Diet is America’s Premier Daily Diet Delivery Service,” which delivers fresh meals to your doorstep daily rather than other diet delivery programs offering frozen or vacuum packed meals delivered once a week.  With their incredible menu and variety of options, The Fresh Diet is also known for their gourmet food.  With the Premium Choice plan, clients receive three meals and two snacks daily and are always amazed at how delicious a diet can be.  Each day, gourmet chefs prepare your meals using select premium ingredients and have them delivered at your doorstep when you wake up each morning.  They also cater to clients needs by allowing them to choose their food allergies and dislikes so that chefs can accommodate such in creating daily dishes.

The Fresh DietThe breakfast options cater to all palates as clients can choose from sweet and savory to light or filling.  For a healthy and light option, the daily menu always offers a fruit plate for breakfast with pre-cut and washed varietals.  We thoroughly enjoyed the Fresh Fruit Salad with Cantaloupe, Raspberry, Papaya, Banana, Pineapple and Banana Ricotta Cheese as all the fruit came washed and cut in bite size pieces for easy munching.  The banana ricotta cheese packaged separately in a cup was the ideal accompaniment to the fresh fruit.  The fruit plates often come with ricotta cheese or yogurt to compliment.  The fruits are always fresh and of good quality, making this a great way to start off the day.  On the other end of the spectrum, the Artichoke, Brie Cheese, and Parsley Omelet with Seven Grain Toast is simple and superb in everyway.  Made with fresh artichokes and creamy brie cheese in between a parsley egg omelet, this delicious starter is ready to be enjoyed after heating.  The melted creamy Brie blends beautifully with the light artichokes and can be spread on the individually wrapped seven grain toast.  The parsley gives the omelet a natural herb flavor and avoids having to use salt or seasoning.  The Fresh Diet also offers other fabulous choices like Carrot and Munster Cheese Quiche, Breakfast Burritos, Tofu Scrambles, and more.

The Fresh DietSince your meals are delivered daily rather than in one large and heavy shipment, customers save on shipping rates and treat their bodies to better quality fresh meals that were cooked just hours earlier.  Having the luxury of refrigerator space is just as valuable since customers do not need to store a weeks’ worth of meals.  Every morning, your meals are delivered in a handy, easy to carry lunch bag with ice packs to keep everything fresh and cool.  For the next day, simply place your empty bag out the evening before and the delivery service will pick it up when delivering a new one.    Out of the other diet delivery programs we have reviewed, The Fresh Diet is by far the easiest in terms of controlling the diet and types of meals to be delivered.  Their one-of-a-kind online system will forever change the way diet delivery programs operate as clients can easily choose all of their meals online from over four different options for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner each day.

The Fresh DietThe Fresh Diet offers two snacks a day, with five different choices daily.  The snacks can be split into a mid-day hors d’oeuvre and after-meal dessert or however one wishes.  The Mini Whole Wheat Pocket Filled with Tuna Salad hits the spot with its flavorful blend of tuna salad spread over a mini whole wheat discs.  We also enjoyed the Grilled Mahi Mahi and Cherry Tomato Skewer as it tasted fresh and right off the grill.  The Mahi Mahi was seasoned well and grilled to a succulent tender texture which paired nicely with the cherry tomatoes.  Other fabulous snacks include Turkey and Green Salsa quesadilla, Chicken Apple Sausage, Mushroom Pork Filled Crowns, Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Pink Poached Pear, and more.  If you want something a little more gourmet, The Fresh Diet has that too.  Who else offers Prosciutto Ham Wrapped Asparagus as a snack?  These fresh steamed asparagus tips are wrapped with prosciutto, a delicious Italian cured ham.

The Fresh DietWe also look forward to lunch because of all the delicious and healthy options available.  From Steak Tacos and Salmon Caesar Wraps to Sloppy Joe Subs, there is something for everyone.  The Fresh Diet always offers a vegetarian option for each of their three meals and two snacks.  Salads are a good option for lunch because with the right amount of protein, they can be filling yet natural and healthy.  The Classic Cobb Salad with grilled chicken, turkey pastrami, tomato, cucumber, romaine lettuce and ranch dressing is absolutely delicious as it has the right amount of diced white chicken meat, turkey pastrami cubes, veggies and lettuce.  Tossed together with the creamy ranch dressing, this salad had flavor and plenty of lean protein.  We also really enjoyed the Grilled Turkey Burger on Whole Wheat bun with lettuce, tomato and dijonaise because it was a good sized burger that was extremely lean yet tasty.  The turkey patty was flavored very well and generously large, providing a substantial portion of protein.  Topped with the lettuce, tomato and dijonsie, this burger was simple and delicious.

What we love about The Fresh Diet is that you simply do not feel like you are on a diet at all!  Their goal is to provide a fresh, healthy new way to think about food as healthy eating is not really about eating only low-fat or low-carbohydrate foods.  While fad diets may shed the pounds at first, it becomes harder in the long run to keep the weight off and avoid health risks.  The Fresh Diet understands that healthy weight loss is about proper nutrition and balance.  Balance beings with proper portions and using whole grains, legumes, vegetables, lean meat and fish proteins to help clients lose weight and feel energetic. “Our program consists of a healthy balance of 40%, 30% and 30% carbohydrates, fats and proteins.”  Most importantly, taste is not compromised as The Fresh Diet was created by a Cordon Bleu Institute trained chef.  All their kitchens are staffed with gourmet chefs who prepare 40/30/30 meals that are sinfully delicious, properly balanced, and perfectly portioned for ideal nutrition and weight loss.

The Fresh DietDinner will definitely be a favorite meal with The Fresh Diet as they offer healthy and delicious varieties of vegetables, lean meats, and two delicious side dishes as an accompaniment.  The Smokey Lemon Rubbed Salmon Filet with Herbed Zucchini Puree and Sautéed Collard Greens was a favorite as the salmon filet was tender without being overcooked.  The zucchini puree was sublime and the sautéed collard greens still held the right consistency.  Another superb fish entrée is the Filet of Lake Victoria Perch with Puttanesca Sauce, with Butternut Squash Puree and Roasted Zucchini Spears.  The filet was flaky and adequately complimented with the puttanesca sauce.  The butternut squash puree was naturally sweet and light while the zucchini spears were cooked just enough to still have a spring in each bite.  Seafood lovers will also enjoy the Grilled Jumbo Shrimp with Lemon, Pepper, and Garlic Sauce with Roasted Red Beets and Green Beans.  The meaty, robust shrimp are grilled with a light lemon pepper seasoning and a touch of garlic.  Delicious and low in fat, shrimp is a great option for dinner.  Other dinner entrees are Baked Chicken Florentine, Oven Fried Catfish Filet, Turkey Breast Cutlets, Grilled Tofu, and more.

The Fresh Diet: Fresh, Gourmet, Delivered…what’s not to love?

by Beauty 411 on October 21, 2011

One of the services that I learned about at Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory while I was in New York for Fashion Week was The Fresh Diet.  The Fresh Diet is a gourmet daily diet delivery service.  Nutritionally sound meals with the ultimate in convenience! Read on for more…

I was given the opportunity to try The Fresh Diet Premium Plan for two weeks, but since I live outside the service area, luckily my daughter in Chicago was able to step up and try it out.  Katy said that the setup was easy:  she went to The Fresh Diet website, entered her weight loss goal and was able to select 3 meals, 1 snack and 1 dessert from an extensive number of options. The meals are prepared by a Cordon-Bleu chef, so the quality and variety of the entrees is excellent. In addition, you are also able to indicate if there are ingredients that you don’t care for, so that if you select an entree with one of those ingredients, you get a popup warning. The calorie range she was given was 1200-1400 per day.

The Fresh Diet delivers your food for the day in a well-insulated cooler and in Katy’s case, it was on her front doorstep by 6:00 am every morning.  She would remove her entrees and then return the cooler to the doorstep, where it would be exchanged the following morning.

Each entree is labeled for reference and individually packaged. A recent day included the following menu:  For breakfast, ricotta and apple crepes with strawberries. Lunch was a Philly steak wrap, dinner was chicken breast with whole wheat noodles and carrots.  She opted out of dessert that day, instead choosing two snacks, which were chicken pesto with stuffed mushrooms and pesto crostini. What impressed me is the variety of options and also, the fact that she didn’t have to repeat entrees, therefore she wasn’t bored.

This type of diet plan is perfect for someone with a busy lifestyle or career that might not have the time to devote to menu planning for a weight loss program.  In addition to the convenience and flexibility, the other big benefit that I see is portion control.  So many times we sabotage our weight-loss efforts because of not measuring or “guesstimating”.  In this case, it’s all perfectly figured out for you.

Overall, Katy was really pleased with The Fresh Diet experience, loving the convenience and flexibility of the plan.  You can get more information on The Fresh Diet including pricing and availability in your area, by going to the website

Consumer Reports rates popular diets to find the best

By Raquel Muhar May 11, 2011 01:53 PM

salad.jpgThe great mystery that has eluded mankind for so long? It’s not where we come from, but rather what’s the best diet for losing weight.

Think about it. It’s a billion dollar industry fueled by our desire to be thin.

Now, Consumer Reports has finally sought to put the debate to rest by rating six popular diets — Atkins, Jenny Craig, Ornish, Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, and the Zone.

The Fresh Diet: The good kind of mindless eating

By Raquel Muhar March 30, 2011 03:01 PM

I enjoy cooking. Most of the time I don’t work from recipes. Instead, I’ll rummage through my kitchen, gather a few ingredients, throw them into a pan and see what happens.

The process is usually very successful and my reward is getting to enjoy the fruits of my labor. Plus, I know that I’m getting a healthy meal.

But I’ll be the first to admit that after a long day I would rather cut out the labor and get straight to the meal. It’s a wish that I’m sure many busy people trying lose weight have.

fresh-diet.jpgRecently I was asked to try a delivery meal program called The Fresh Diet. Each morning for seven days I had three meals and two snacks waiting for me in a cooler at my front door.

For the first time in a long time, I didn’t have to think about or plan what my next meal was going to be. I didn’t have to run to the store to go shopping. I didn’t have break out my food scale or measuring cups. I didn’t have to log my calories in a journal. As a life-long dieter, in a way I felt liberated.

The Fresh Diet meal plan is based on a ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 30% proteins and 30% fats — a formula known to many as The Zone. They offer programs specifically tailored for diabetics, vegetarians, men and women.

You can also select from two different daily caloric values based on your weight-loss goals and how active you are. My daily intake was approximately 1200-1400 calories.

One of the best things about The Fresh Diet is that you have a lot of control over what you eat. Through your online account you can flag foods you that you dislike or don’t want to eat. For me, it was red meat and pasta. In addition, you can customize your meals from a selection of 12 options.

Some of my favorites were the grilled turkey burger, French onion omelet, Italian scrambled eggs and salmon Caesar salad wrap. I was impressed with how fresh and flavorful everything was. All the food is prepared daily and locally with minimal reheating required.

You’ll pay a hefty price for all the convenience. A one-month plan will run you between $35 to $45 a day. But if you’re already spending that kind of money on eating out, I would say this is a better investment in your health.

Overall, my experience was very positive. At the end of the seven days, I dropped 2 pounds.

If you’re curious about The Fresh Diet and want to sample some of the meals, check out their new Grab + Go retail location in North Miami. They’re located under L.A. Fitness at The Causeway Square, 1813 N.E. 123rd St.

Does this woman look scary to you? Didn’t think so!

Move over Scary Movie, Scary Spice, and even Scary, West Virginia… there’s a new “scary” celebrity in town! This one is taking the blogosphere by storm by providing, “An honest take on motherhood; the good, the bad and… the scary!” She’s also going to be reviewing The Fresh Diet for the next month. Be sure to tune into the blog and read about Scary Mommy’s journey to a healthier lifestyle.

Incidentally, what’s so “scary” about Scary Mommy? Her website does have some splashes of artwork in the style of Ralph Steadman, but other than that, I couldn’t find anything. Now, Joan Crawford was one scary mommy. (Did you ever see Mommie Dearest?) The author in question seems like a caring parent with a highly entertaining blog. Evidently, Jill’s son named her Scary Mommy during a phase when he was afraid of everything, including grilled cheese sandwiches. Oh, well. The name does have a nice ring to it!

Eating unhealthy processed food can be really scary. Click here to have our fresh, gourmet meals delivered to your door.

If you haven’t been following our friend Carol’s blog, you have really been missing out! Carol is a loyal FD customer and a regular participant on The Fresh Diet’s Facebook page. She also happens to be a nurse with an extremely positive outlook on life.

Carol is blogging about her experiences with The Fresh Diet and so much more. In her latest post, she reminds us of the many health benefits of laughter. My mother always says that laughter is the best medicine. I guess she has been right all of these years. Mothers always know!

The first time I saw one of the Monty Python movies, I laughed so hard that tears actually started streaming down my face. By the time the movie was over, my body felt like it had been through a good workout. It turns out that there was a reason for that.

Laughter activates the immune system, reduces stress, relaxes the muscles, and gives you an internal workout. Stopping to smell the roses is great, but it is important to have a good, old-fashioned belly laugh, too. Read Carol’s latest blog post to find out how The Fresh Diet can nourish your body, and a good belly laugh can help cure what ails you.

Carol is writing her own success story with The Fresh Diet, and you can, too. Click here to have our fresh, gourmet food delivered right to your door.

jocy c. Jackson Heights, NY.  From (original article link:

I must say I’m not a big fan of diets.  I’m normally a good eater (no fried food, no butter, etc).  My problem is that my portion size are too big.  I’m not too heavyset either, I’m about 5’9 and 160 lbs.

Anyway, I tried out The Fresh Diet because my bf and I eat out in restaurants in Jackson Heights area too much.  There is so much variety of food here, and it’s inexpensive, so it’s hard not to eat out.

My bf’s doctor had warned him to lower his salt intake, so I started looking for a food program that would be balanced and not have the “diet” food, so he and I did bought the program for about a week and loved it.  We renewed our program for 31 days, and then just recently renewed again for another 31 days.

The program consists of freshly made food delivered the night before.  That way, you’ll always have your food in the morning before you go to work.  Each delivery of food for the day consists of 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, & dinner) and 2 snacks (salty snack & dessert).

At first, I was really hungry because my bf and I were consuming more than your normal 2000 calorie diet.  I had to supplement with a bit more food on the side.  As time wore down, my stomach started shrinking, so now the food is enough for me.  I have lost weight in the past 3 months; about 15 lbs.  I think females get 1400 to 1600 calories a day, I asked Fresh Diet to up my caloric intake to be the same as my bf’s 1600 to 1800 a day.  That is nice because I can still have a Coke on the side and still be under my 2000 calorie intake per day.

Besides the fresh food, the other nice thing about this program is that it’s flexible.  I currently have the food delivered Mondays through Thursdays.  Then on Fridays through Sundays, my bf and I eat out at the restaurants around the area.

As you can see, our intention to join this program wasn’t to lose weight, it was to eat healthier and reduce my bf’s salt intake.  For me personally, I have lost about 10 to 15 lbs in the past 3 months (sorry I don’t have a scale to actually weigh myself; I did go down a size in my clothes).  I don’t do any extreme exercise, I walk my dog about 1 hour per day 3 to 4 times a week and around the block for the other days.  I do always try to take the stairs, but definitely am not a gym person.

The food generally has been really good. I do the Chef Choice 31 day program which averages out to about $35 a day.  That’s about the same price as I would pay between breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I had bought food.

Customer service reaches out about every month and half or so just to check in and see if you are happy with the program.

Some of the dishes that I have liked:

1) Hawaiian Pineapple Stuffed Whole Wheat French Toast with Strawberries and Blueberry Cottage Cheese
2) Creamy Mushroom Scrambled Eggs with Nine Grain Toast
3) Cajun Style Egg White Omelet with Bell Pepper, Onion, Turkey Sausage, and Roasted Roma Tomatoes
4) Spinach & Feta Cheese Egg Bake with Fresh Papaya

1) Chicken and Wild Rice Soup with Shitaake Mushroom
2) Grilled Lamb Burger on Whole Wheat Bun with Yellow Tomato & Mint Aioli
3) Philly Cheese Steak Whole Wheat Wrap with Sauteed Mushrooms
4) Turkey Souvlaki on Whole Wheat Pita with Minted Yogurt Sauce and Celery Sticks
5) Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich on Whole What Bun with Sauteed Mushrooms

1) Filet of Chilean Sea Bass with Citrus Chipotle Sauce with Green Split Pea Puree and Haricot Vert
2) Roasted Pork Loin with Apricot Curry Sauce with Herbed Celery Root Puree and Steamed Snow Peas
3) Lean Turkey Meatballs with Fresh Marinara Sauce with Sun-Dried Tomato Couscous and Roasted Yellow Squash
4) Greek Style Meatballs with Feta Cheese, Mint, Parsley, and Roasted Bell Pepper with Parnsip, Pear Puree, and Grilled Yellow Tomato

1) Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin
2) Pear Walnut Muffin
3) Cinnamon Pear Cheese Cake
4) Passion Fruit Cheese Cake

The only caution I have is that sometimes the fish that they pick either isn’t fresh or is too fishy in general.  The fishiness sometimes goes onto the veggies, so I feel like I’m eating a whole plate of fish.  There have been a few misses with the food, but overall, I would say that I’m a fan and would continue to subscribe to the program for part of the week.
